The Confederation of Free Worlds
Considered a bit of an ironic name by many pundits, the joke is that the only thing the Confederation of Free Worlds is free of is The Alliance charter.
The CFW is composed of about two hundred different species with its core worlds located anti-spinward and rimward of the main body of The Alliance.
The Confederation Pact is much more loose in regards to the authorities of its member governments than the Alliance. As such Confederation worlds run the gamut from oppressive dictatorships of all flavors to libertarien anarchies where might makes right. Inequality, classism, and ecconomic exploitation of populations and resources with little to no oversight is common. “Freedom” in the CFW is for those with the might, the money, or the guile to take it.
The CFW is dominated by an informal coalition of the most powerful member governments and corporations. They make sure that the other member worlds keep in their place and tow the Confederation line.
Unlike the Alliance, the CFW has both a representative and an executive division to its government. No judicial though.
The Confederation senate is largely ineffective however and is mostly thare for show and to support the executive office.
The executive office is composed of a staff of ministers headed by a Speaker of the Staff rather than a president. The ministers are the true authority of the Confederation government, but even they are realy little more than the political front for the handful of powerful member worlds and organizations who dominate the CFW.
By the Confederation Pact, the CFW has no over all military or police force. Each world is free to maintain its own military and police forces as it sees fit.
In truth however the strongest members of the CFW often dominate less powerful worlds with their military or ploice preasence under the auspices of “helping our neighbors”. Of course they generaly only do this when there is something on those worlds they wish to exploit.
